More on Liam and Some Random Thoughts

We have learned more about Liam.  Here are a few things:

1. Although Liam loves his bath, he hates rain!
When raindrops hit  Liam's head, he cries like rocks fell on his head.  Maybe it's a new sensation for him?

2. Liam is almost off the Asian growth charts!
Liam had his check up with the pediatrician who is traveling with us.  Dr. Barbara ______________________.  (will fill in when I can remember)   She is an awesome lady!
He came in 75th percentile in height and 90th percentile in weight on the Asian charts.  His head only came in at 25th percentile which surprised me because his head looks big, but one of the grandmothers traveling with us has a theory on that.  Many of the babies laid in one position too long in the orphanages and have flat places on their heads.  Liam has quite a flat place on the area between the back and side of his head which would probably explain the small measurement.
Liam must have known he was being checked for developmental appropriateness.  She gave him a board book about cars (Kyra got to pick out which one she thought he'd like from Barbara's collection and she chose well!) which Dr. Barbara signed.  He sat on my lap looking at the pictures while I said red car, blue car, yellow car.  For the first time, Liam repeated every word I said exactly!   She was quite impressed.

3.  Speaking of developmental skills, Liam's fine motor skills are quite developed.  Even the Chinese waitresses are so impressed with how well he handles his spoon to feed himself.  He even uses his spoon to wipe dribbles from his chin to his mouth and will hold his other hand under the spoon if it looks like it's going to drip.   He can also put on and remove his shoes.  He was quite independent at the foster home apparently, so for the sake of attachment, I'm trying to feed him and put his shoes on when he'll let me.  He's pretty good about letting me.

4.  Liam hugged his sister for the first time ( I think).
Liam has not hugged anyone.  When you hold him his arms hang limply.  He walked up to Kyra and put his arms around his waist.   I quickly praised his saying "Good job!  Hug!" Over and over.   He loves being praised.   (But for all I know he was initially intending to knock her over!)

5.  Liam can hold his breath underwater - I think.
The baby pool here comes up to Liam's chest.   He loves to walk around in it and will try to run.  Twice he has fallen and gone under.  With our hearts in our mouth, we've always been right with him and scooped him up quickly.  No coughing and sputtering and no tears, so apparently that automatic hold your breath under water reflex is still with him.   Scary stuff though! He may not have been scared, but we sure were!

6. Liam is transferring his attachment to me, but it is very insecure (naturally).
Liam initially attached to Craig which is not unusual and Craig was thrilled.  Craig wanted him to start attaching to me, so Craig could go back to work.  Now , Laim is very distraught if I even go into the bathroom and shut the door.  He stands outside crying with his arms up toward the door.   If Craig picks him up, he cries and pushes him away.  Now I feel bad for Craig, but this is apparently common and you should really only have one person meeting his needs so he can form strong attachment to one person at a time.   I think he'll still be daddy's boy gradually because daddy is certainly more fun!

Random Thoughts:

Kyra's patience have worn away.   She has now started purposely annoying him by grabbing things she knows he likes to play with and not sharing.   Her understanding has mostly disappeared and she now says he's mean (he is very aggressive!) and she doesn't want a little brother.   It's really quite exhausting and I wonder if they'll ever love each other!  Meanwhile, I'm  in for a long summer!   I'll be stocking up on chocolate!  (for me!)

I fear for Sophie.   I'm not sure how Liam will react to Sophie, but expect that it isn't going to be pretty.   He has no interest in looking at the photo book I brought of Sophie pictures and just knocks it away. My poor dear Sophie - who would only hurt a chipmunk : ( - never a child-but I don't plan on leaving the 2 of them  alone for a long time.  Sophie might be tempted to defend herself!  I'll be stocking up on special treats for Sophie as well!

I have big hands!   I went to get a jade bracelet at the jade market.  The Chinese tradition here
is for the mother to wear a jade bracelet on her left arm until her daughter is married and then give it to her on her wedding day.   I wanted to try to follow that tradition.  With 3 other couples and our guide watching -  I began to look for a nice bracelet at a shop our guide, Wensie, took us to.  The two Chinese men couldn't find a bracelet to fit over my big hand.  The Chinese woman held a plastic bag around my hand while the men tried to squeeze bracelet after bracelet over my hand.   We were all cracking up and I can only imagine what the the Chinese were saying about my big horse hands!   I finally ended up with a lovely bracelet that I have little choice but to wear indefinitely!

Kyra loves China.  Kyra talks about how she likes China. We've only done 2 journal entries because we lost her journal for a while, but both entires talked about how we all love China. But she frequently tells me she is glad she lives in America because she likes American potties better than Chinese potties.  (We call them squatty potties - they are basically flushable holes in the floor and you have to bring your own toilet paper!) She refuses to write about her brother yet because he's mean and she wants to wait until he's nice.

Kyra said for the second time the other night that she feels like she's in a story.   I love when she says that - it describes the adoption experience well.

The first night that Liam spent with us we slept in a family bed all together.  I switched sides to be next to Kyra and Liam reached over the top of her pillow and for the first time reached out his arms and said, "Ma".     That's a random thought I will never forget!

Finally - Some Time and Energy to Blog!

Hello from a happy boy in Guangzhou!!!!   We have been so busy, I haven't had time to blog. Especially since we ALL go to bed at 8:00!
A run down of the last few days:
Tuesday was a full day of paper work.  On Wednesday morning we had the amazing honor of attending a Children's Day program at Liam's orphanage - Guangzhou Social Welfare Institute.
The program was wonderful with dances by the children and a traditional dance by the teachers.   It turns out that Liam and the twins in our group (the only 3 children in our large group from Guangzhou orphanage) were in the Half the Sky program.  Half the Sky is an excellent charity that builds additions to orphanages and provides teacher and nanny training
 to Chinese orphanages.

Even though Liam has been in foster care for the past 9 months except for the night before we got him when he was back at the orphanage - all of his teachers and nannies remembered him.  But when one of them would hold him- he would cry and reach for us.  While I hesitated to take him back him back to the orphanage, I think it provided closure for him- an opportunity to say good-bye and see that he would still be leaving with us.

We were then able to visit his finding place where his birth parents placed him so that he would be found and taken to an orphanage to find his forever parents.  We have film footage of his orphanage and finding place.

Wednesday afternoon was more paperwork and on Thursday, Daddy took Kyra and Liam to the pool while I went to the jade and pearl market and walked though the local herb market.

Friday, we went shopping and for Liam's Buddhist blessing (picture below) and Saturday we went to the playground which is also full of older folks on adult exercise machines. Today we are just hanging out.   We have our consulate appointments on Monday and Tuesday.

Here are some of our favorite photos!

Liam fell asleep on my lap at Lucy's restaurant where we usually have lunch.  It's in a lovely park next to the White Swan where you'll find locals playing a game like hackey sack, but with shuttlecocks, people doing tai chi, ballroom dancing and singing in groups.
Liam knew right away what to do on a sliding board and loved it!

Liam is phoning home on his cell phone.  He loves buttons.  He opens up his phone, pushes the buttons, puts it to his ear and says "Why!" which is Cantonese for Hello.

Kyra in her new traditional tiger hat at Lucy's restaurant!

Liam has gotten better with his big sister - less aggressiveness - he's beginning to figure out we have enough love and attention for both of them I hope!  But he still hits and pushes and Kyra has been so patient that she has earned sainthood.  Here is Sister Kyra!

Sister Kyra loves pushing her baby brother in his stroller. They're dressed in  matching clothes here!

Little brother Liam had a great time spinning Kyra around in a spinning chair at the playground.    Playing together!   I love it!

Kyra and Liam feeding the koi at the White Swan.

Our happy family in front of the waterfall in the White Swan lobby.

On Friday, we went to the Six Banyan Tree Temple where Liam had his Buddhist Blessing.  We do this out of respect for his Chinese culture.   Liam was the perfect gentleman sitting quietly and watching through the whole ceremony.

Our little Buddhist monk!

What We've Learned About Liam

1. He LOVES Food!!!!!
He puts Kyra to shame when it comes to eating.  He loves noodles, bread, and Asian fruits like lychee and fire dragon fruit.  (Should be easy to find those in New Hampshire... not!) He loves hot milk and rice cakes and even spaghetti.  We've tried to stick with Asian foods, but whether he's eating too much or new things - the food is going straight through him messing up his potty training.  It's pull-ups every day for now.

2. He LOVES buttons and knobs!
Whether it's the computer, the phone, the elevator or the end table controls that turn all the lights in the room on and off --he wants to push the buttons!   Surprise - just like his dad- he LOVES the remote control!

3.  He snores!
Being in the hotel room at night with Daddy and Liam is like echoes in a canyon.  Big snore, little snore, big snore, little snore....all night long!

4. He grows horns at 6:30 pm!
The poor little guy hasn't been able to nap.  Too much stimulation and off schedule no doubt.
He's so well behaved all day , but at 6:30 ish, he sprouts horns and torments his sister. So far he has hit her with a bottle, thrown a book at her, pushed her and bitten her big toe!  Kyra has been far more understanding about it than I.  She has been the ultimate big sister - I'm so very proud of her!

5. He loves cars and balls!
He loves rolling his cars around and throwing beach balls.  When the balls hit him in the head he giggles like crazy!

6. He doesn't like to share!
I suppose this is a combo of 2 year old and orphanage/foster care behavior.  He was in foster care with other children, so it was no doubt the survival of the fittest.

7. He LOVES water!
We're so thrilled he loves the water!  He and Kyra took their first sibling bath together and he had a blast splashing and playing.  He'll be snorkeling in no time.  (kidding...)

8.He doesn't have the restaurant concept down yet.
The minute he sits down at a table, he start scrunching his face up because he wants food now!

9. He LOVES his daddy.
He recognizes both of us as his parents now, I think.  That was evidenced at the visit to his orphanage yesterday.  (More about that when we have time to upload pix.) When one of his nannies took him he cried and  reached for daddy. He has said ma and da da to us. He reaches his arms for both us, but he is definitely daddy's boy!  Daddy is thrilled!

We Have Liam!!!!!

We have had Liam for over 24 hours.  He is awesome!!!  We love him to pieces!  Kyra loves him - she's been such a good big sister - I'm so proud of her!

He was very passive for the first 24 hours, but started smiling within an hour after we got him.
The first shots were his Adoption Day yesterday.  The last photo is today during our many hours of paperwork and interviews.  We have now officially adopted him in China!

The most wonderful thing Kyra has said (besides she likes her baby brother) is "I feel like I'm in a story.  All of a sudden I have a baby brother."     It is like a story with a happy ending!

One Hour 27 Minutes

This is a guest post by Craig.  Kim is too nervous to post and just went to take something for her stomach.  In 57 minutes we meet our guide to go to where we get Liam.  By 2:30 pm May 25, 2009, we should be experiencing our Gotcha moment with the little tike.   He hardly knows what is about to hit him.  Then again, the same could be said for us.

Kyra was up in the middle of the night again and then up for the day around 5:oo.  We are right now trying to get her to take a short nap.  We know if she does not sleep now, we will all pay the price later.

No pictures for this post. We will have some fantastic pictures of our new family for the next one - hopefully later today.  Gotta go!

Tomorrow is the Day

We are here in Guangzhou and will  get Liam tomorrow at 2:30.   We're all unpacked, organized and ready to go !

We're here with 3 other families. Most of the other families in our enormous group are in Nanchang.   Kyra has become good friends with a 6 year old girl, also adopted from China, who is here with her mom (single)  and grandmother.  They are here to adopt an 18 month old boy and I'm so glad that they have each other since everyone else will have little sisters.

If anyone wants to skype with us - it's best to keep your computers and skype on between 7-9 am and 7-9 pm.  We'll try to catch you when we can!

Less than 24 hours and counting!

1 Day (maybe 0?!) And Counting

We were told yesterday that the people going to Nanchung would be getting their babies about
4:30 today instead of tomorrow morning.  We were told that they think the other provinces (that would be us) may also get their children today instead of tomorrow.  We won't know until we get there!   We're all packed and ready to fly to Guangzhou.   We've been up since 4:00 am thanks to you-know-who so we're all just running on adrenaline now!

The past two days have been a whirlwind of China sights.  We started Friday with a trip to the Summer Palace.  Absolutely beautiful.  Kyra and I are pictured here by the largest man-made lake in China.   We walked the longest corridor in the world - almost 1/2 mile - so the Emporer and Empress could see nature without being out in the rain or snow.  We also took a lovely boat ride on the lake.
The highlight of touring for me was a rickshaw tour of a Beijing hutong.  Hutong means narrow alley and is used to refer to the old neighborhoods where the homes are over 100 years old.  In these narrow alleys - rickshaws, bikes, and cars and pedestrians all try to maneuver simultaneously - it's an amazing sight!   We got to visit a home in the hutong that has been in Mrs. Wong's family for generations.  She is an artist that teaches students to paint inside of tiny snuff bottles.  Kyra got to try it and we made purchases.

Saturday included Tianeman square ([ictured above) , Forbidden City, and finally, Kyra's dream - The Great Wall.  All in 92 degree heat!!!  It was the experience of a lifetime for Kyra!

Must go quickly to catch plane.  Hopefuylly LIam will be with us soon.

We're Here!!!!

We  left Manchester Airport 6:30 am on Wed., May 20 and arrived at the Beijing Airport at 1:30 pm on Thurs. May 21 (China time).  Flying first class was awesome!  After our mid-flight snack that included all of Kyra's favorites (strawberries, oreos, kit kat bars), Kyra said,"I love flying. I want to fly every day!

When we landed, people in masks entered the plane yielding futuristic gun-like scanners and pointed them at our foreheads to check our temperature.  Very star-trek like!   No fevers - yea!!!

At dinner last night in our hotel, Kyra looked around and said, "Everybody here has black hair except mommy and daddy."   I wondered how long it would take her to notice that Craig and I are the minority here.  Many of the Chinese people stare at her- especially the men.  I wonder if they are just seeing if she is happy and cared for or if they are looking for someone.  The thought of it makes me sad.

Kyra has had a total of 10 hours sleep in 2 days.  She was up from 11-3 last night. I worry that she is going to get wound out of control or just completely melt down.

This is our beautiful hotel lobby with fountain and ceiling.  As soon as we walked in they have a display of flags from many countries in a flag holder.  Kyra ran ove, grabbed out the American flag and started waving it around.

Today we tour a Beijing hutong by rickshaw and the Summer Palace and Gardens.

I can't believe we're only 2 days away from meeting our son!   We'll be there soon Liam! We're so very excited to meet you!

5 Days and Counting

We've made it to the Newark Airport on our journey to Liam! So far, the only thing I've forgotten is my camera cord that I need to upload pictures to this blog. Fortunately!, we have Kyra's new camera and her cord, so we'll use it for pictures we'll want to upload.

The only other glitch is that our suitcases are too heavy for the required in-China travel weight limit of 44 pounds for suitcases and 11 pounds for carry-ons. We have learned that our scales at home are worthless. Our suitcases weighed 40, 40 and 45 pounds at home. We had planned to move things around a bit. But at the airport, they weight 42, 46, and 50 pounds!!! If anyone in our travel group packed over 44 pounds - the whole group gets fined!!! We have to unload some things in Beijing obviously - but what??? And our carry ons? Mine is 15 pounds and Craig's is 20 pounds. oops... We're allowed to have a personal item in addition to our carry-on, so Craig and I will both be carrying very heavy purses.

If these are the worst things to happen to us - I'll be thrilled. It could be much worse - we ran into one of the couples in our travel group with their 3 biological children, and through a communication error with the airline - they completely missed their flight. They're not sure when they'll get to China now!!!

We're all still healthy - the skin on our hands will no doubt start falling off soon from all the Purell I keep pouring on everyone's hands. And when I started scrubbing down armrests, seat belts, seat backs and table trays with anti-bacterial wipes - I thought Craig's eyes were going to roll out of his head. My friend, Angie, taught me this trick and I'm glad I know it! I'm so germ phobic that Craig has started calling me Howie Mandell.

As long as we all stay feverless - I don't care!

We'll arrive in China around 1:30 pm China time - now I just need to get Kyra to sleep and be awake at the right times, so we can all adjust quickly.

We're on our way Liam! We can't wait to get to you!!!

10 Days and Counting

We are counting down the days until we have our son in our arms.  We leave for China in just 5 days on Wed. May 20th.   We've waited so very long for this.  Airline tickets are purchased, hotel reservations are made, and we have our appointment to get Liam on Monday, May 25 at 9:30 am.

We had our travel meeting with our adoption agency yesterday.  It was great seeing the faces of the ladies I've been in touch with in our yahoo group for the past 3 YEARS!   The meeting went well except for one big damper.  One of the single women who was to travel with us will not be traveling with us because the province where her child is completely shut down, including the airport,  after someone got off the plane with a fever.  So, while we are all so very excited, we are all on the edge of our seats, praying that more provinces, especially our own, don't shut down.  China is being extremely cautious about the swine flu. We had already been informed that if anyone on our plane has a fever, everyone will be quarantined.   I, for one, have decided to hand out massive amounts of tylenol fever reducer to everyone on our plane!  On the up side - - we were able to upgrade to business class using our frequent flier miles - we'll be traveling in comfort!  This will make life easier, especially when traveling with a 5 year old and 2 year old!

Aside from the swine flu panic, everything else is in place and we are very, very excited to begin our Journey to Liam.

Here is a quick idea of our itinerary...

Wed., May 20 - Depart Manchester, NH airport to Beijing, China
Thurs., May 21 - Arrive Beijing, China

Packing for China

Need I say more?

Mother's Day Tea

Kyra's preschool's 4 year olds gave a wonderful Ladybug Tea on Monday for Mother's Day.
First, the mothers were treated to a delightful recital with songs like "Rockin' Robin" and "I'm a Little Teapot"

After the recital, each child led their mother downstairs.  Kyra held my hand, took me downstairs and led me to my seat.  What a surprise!

Kyra had made the placemat, a lady bug necklace that she put on me, planted pansies, decorated a cup cake like a lady bug, drew a picture of me and wrote a story about me.
It was absolutely adorable!
The kids showed us all our things and then went to their classrooms so the moms could enjoy their lovely tea and chat.
Each table had 2 unique teapots.

This is the teapot Kyra wanted me to use.  It looked like a flower.  She even asked me at the end of the day if that was the teapot I used.
Kyra drew a lovely picture of me and wrote an interesting story about me.  It's an absolute keeper!

MOMMY

My mommy has long blonde hair and green eyes. She likes to wear pants and shirts. She never wears dresses. She works around the house.  Sometimes she goes away for work for three days or something.  What she thinks is fun is talking to mothers. She doesn't like me to call her in the night and wake her up. My mom likes to cook healthy things like vegetables. She doesn't like to cook fish because we had a pet fish and it died. My mom works on her computer while I watch TV. We have moms so they can keep you safe.  I really love it when my mom hugs me.
I love you.
Kyra

What better Mother's Day gift could anyone possibly want?

FINALLY!!!! TRAVEL DATES!!!

Today was a very exciting day!  I received an email at 9:30 that we have our consulate appointments for June 1st.  That's exactly the date we needed to travel next Wednesday, May 20th.   We immediately contacted our travel agent, Sue Sorrels, in Dallas, Texas to see if she could find tickets that we could upgrade to business using our frequent flier miles.  I seriously had my doubts with such short notice, but Sue, the miracle worker, did it again!!!

Four years ago, when we traveled to China to adopt Kyra,  Sue was able to find a way to upgrade to first class using our miles.   I highly recommend her to anyone traveling to Asia to adopt!  It's her specialty!

So, Liam Cameron ShuLi Brown, get ready!  Your forever family is coming soon!

Travel News, Liam's Room and Other Ramblings

Things have been bustling in the Brown house.   Our agency is still hoping we'll travel May 20th, but rumors and delays connected to the swine flu have kept us on the edge of our seats.

Our travel approvals finally arrived Friday, May 8th.  The next thing to wait for is our consulate appointment.  Hopefully, our agency, China Adoption with Love, will be able to confirm those on Monday or Tuesday.  Meanwhile, Jianxi Province, where most of the babies in our travel group are from, are not giving provincial appointments because of swine flu.  In other words, we can now travel to China, we might even be able to get our babies' visas at the US consulate, but most of our travel group may not be able to get their babies!!!!   Apparently, some agencies are being allowed to come and some are not.  The question is... will our agency be allowed to get their babies or not?  And if the people in our travel group who have babies in Jianxi can't go --- will we be able to go and get Liam who is in Guangdong Province?   As you can see, the roller coaster ride continues.   Just to put the cherry on top - our Visas were delayed at the Chinese Embassy because of the swine flu.  Fingers crossed that they arrive tomorrow AND we all get both consulate and provincial appointments.  Then we'll be finally
ready to travel.

Needless to say, we've been keeping busy getting ready to travel to China and bring Liam home.  Mommy's favorite project has been decorating his bedroom.   We went ahead and bought him a matching bedroom suite with a big boy bed even though he'll be in a crib or toddler bed for awhile.  Kyra bought him a special teddy bear and was very particular about how his pillows and bear were arranged on his bed - very sweet.

Hopefully, I'll be rocking Liam and reading him stories on this rocking chair very soon!

We've ordered a book shelf that will be painted dark blue and we're still looking for wall decorations.  I hope Liam likes it!  Sophie seems to!

Of course, mommy has also had fun shopping for clothes for Liam and for travel clothes for Kyra and mommy!    Packing is almost done!

Kyra has been keeping busy while she waits for her baby brother.  Auntie Vicki, Uncle John, Xiao Xiao, Ariel and Boris sent Kyra a camera in her favorite color, pink.  She loves taking pictures!  You can check some of them out at her new blog, kyrasblog1.blogspot.com.

She's developed an interest in watering plants and digging in dirt.  She calls it gardening...

And finally... Kyra's latest favorite mode of transportation around the house....

my rollerblades!

Kyra' Blog

Kyra now has her own blog.  It is to post some of the pictures she takes with her new camera, a big sister gift from her Auntie Vicki, Uncle John, Xiao Xiao, Ariel and Boris.
